Talent show 08

For the talent show, I offered myself service in taking part with the performances that were taking place as well as coordianting the food & drink stalls. Performing isn't really my thing so it required me to be a risk-taker, to perform infront of parents, teachers and students alike. Being in charge of the stalls required me to be principled, and friendly communicator as I dealt with money, and all sorts of parents which I was not familiar with. All in all it was a rewarding challenging experience.

ACTION: Temburong Trip

On the 22nd of August 2008 the IB class of 08-09 went away to the Outward Bound Brunei Darussalam centre in Temburong, well-known for its lush massive expanse of rainforest, exotic wildlife, rapids and waterfalls. This trip would be part of our orientation and preparation, mentally and physically for the next two years. The main focus of this trip was “team building” Throughout the 3 days we were in Temburong, we experienced several new exciting and challenging activities. Throughout the 3 day course we were separated into 3 groups and took part in all events at times with our group and at other times with one of the other groups. Some events that we did were flying-fox, trekking, camping outdoors, kayaking, trust fall, swimming and navigating.

Over the 3 days I experienced several shocking yet memorable moments that changed my perception of Temburong. I learnt how to work well with different and new people. I found out that I could easily connect with each other, put aside our differences and just have fun together. I also found out that my fears can be conquered with the help of my encouraging friends, belief in myself and consistent effort. I think throughout the trip I was a very persistent team member. I was constantly trying to push my limits despite the fact I was tired and felt like giving up at times. I also thought I was an important team member as during the 6 to 7 hour trek, I carried a water filter system in my backpack. This made me important because I carried the only mechanism used to collect clean water from the river. I was also a co-leader as I would help support people when would come across unstable, slippery ground or I would help give earlier warnings or advise. For example I would warn my team member behind me if there was a low fallen branch or advise one of my team members to hold on to a liana for support.

I believe that out of the 10 IB learner profiles, I demonstrated a few of them over the course of 3 days. During the period of camping outdoors and kayaking, I expressed myself as an inquirer, constantly being inquisitive and wanting to know the fundamentals involving camping and survival skills. As it was my first time kayaking I also found it important to know how to manoeuvre a kayak skilfully. When we were trekking we had to be knowledgeable and thinkers in terms of navigation as it was our responsibility to find our own way to our campsite. We therefore also had to be open-minded, sharing our thoughts and ideas about which route we should follow to get us to the campsite as fast as possible. Hence this caused us to be communicators. Whilst we were trekking we found ourselves soon tangled in a dilemma. Within the 3 hour or so we were soon exhausted and weary from the heat, rain, humidity, dirt. Despite this, we continued to encourage each other and look out for each other, showing our caring spirit. When it came to the flying-fox and kayaking I soon realized we were dare devils, continuously throwing ourselves against fear and facing it; being a risk – takers. I still recall suddenly realizing there was a slight fear of heights and I found it difficult to trust the equipment that would be attaching me to the flying fox. I also remember having to fight the raging currents whilst we were kayaking, and pushing my trapped kayak with my paddle, back into the current despite the fear that my paddle would break or our kayak might be destroyed and capsize during the process of freeing my kayak. Last but not least we were definitely all reflective as we would always have group discussions at the end of the day. We would usually talk about how we felt or how were our personal experience or if we learnt anything new.
